In celebration of its 50th anniversary as a choreographer and teacher of teachers, make a master workshops in Barcelona, invited by Sarabi, teaching technique and choreography in various styles of Egyptian folklore and classical mode

Reda The teacher will spend approximately half of each module to spread his method and language, which has made him so famous. The other half of the course is to teach some folk styles of Egypt: the steps typical of each style, and a short choreography of each to put the steps into practice in music, and show how to step transitions step.

Rivas Festival pays tribute to Egyptian choreographer Mahmoud Reda

Rescued the dances of the peasants crossing the Nile with a tape recorder
Mahmoud Reda knee hurts like crazy since it was operated for seven years, with 71. So onto the stage to lecture accompanied by a dark and athletic dancer dealing with the antics when the script requires. Not seem to worry anyone: every economic and subtle movement of the secondary Reda the tinkling of bells wrapped in 40 hips. They are her devoted students, he is the star of the second Festival of Arabic Music and Dance which takes place in Rivas Vaciamadrid.

Star and principle of all
The festival organizer, Julia Salmon, is a Spanish dancer in 1999 he bought an open ticket to Cairo which took five years to close. There he met the legend of Reda, a former Olympic gymnast, the father of modern oriental dance. The choreographer trained her and opened the doors of a dance much more refined than that revealed harem fantasies were played so far.

What Reda trying to do since I created the first dance company of his country in 1959 was to fill the chasm between Arab culture and popular official. Traveling through the valley of the Nile with a tape rescued from oblivion the dances of the peasants, enriched with elements of other musical cultures (jazz, ballet, Indian ...) to give them an artistic sense, and took the stage. Before him, the belly dancers were considered little more than prostitutes in hotel bars. Reda's initiative was part of the Arab Renaissance movement, which sought in the ashes of tradition material to rebuild the pride after the feast of European colonialism. The godfather of the propaganda was cultural adventure and Egyptian President Jamal Abdel Nasser. Reda was not in vain Secretary of State for Culture.

Rivas held these days the legacy of the dancer. The first edition was held in Madrid at the Teatro Gran Vía, but for successive deliveries there were problems with the provision of space. The City Council negotiated with Julia Salmerón ripen after the choreographer passed through the city with a show of their dance group, the Al-Andalus, and gave him Pilar Bardem auditorium for shows and workshops.

Sixty musicians have played on Tuesday 7; many promises, such as guitarist Ali Khattab. Every night, the neighbors of Rivas, with a rich North African population, has been welcomed with palms out of the percussionists on the Plaza of the Constitution: this Saturday is the turn of Henkesh Khamis, a reference in the field.

Arab culture is looking for a loophole to become visible in the twenty-first century multicultural festival. Pending a phenomenon as the film Slumdog Millionaire, which has set to Bollywood in the western market, cultural production remains closed in on itself. Reda summarizes the problem in one sentence: "In Egypt we do good cinema, but for the Arabs not to be understood here."

He himself was the local movie star in the sixties. Royal receptions and danced in front of heads of state. Now, looking out the window a parking Rivas, remember your resume is bored, preferring to reflect on the content of the peasant dance workshop prepared: "The protagonist is a girl who picks grapes. "I looked at folklore, and now it reinterprets peasant dance in their people what I have seen me," says hit wonders the arms of his chair.

In the peasant dance workshop coexistence of diverse races is harmonic: tanned professional dancers on the circuit Madrid tea shops, housewives, young Rastafarian and a man dressed as a woman. A Reda pleases the crowd. "People enjoy a dance because it is easily understood, but requires perfect sacrifice," he explains. With sacrifice came to Carnegie Hall to prove that their culture was not a circus, but of artistic value. Then came the explosion of the Eastern dance, culture, traveling millions of megabits per second and inventions impossible as tribal gothic belly dance: "I've seen do Marilyn Manson," says one dancer bet against classes yoda Reda.
